How PianoMe helps musicians stay flexible – Real stories from our rehearsal spaces sharing community

Real stories from PianoMe - rehearsal spaces sharing community

Why we started sharing these stories

Over the years, PianoMe has grown into a large international community of musicians, music teachers, students, rehearsal space providers, and music enthusiasts.

Every day, musicians from different countries use www.piano.me/en to find rehearsal spaces, organise their practice routines, prepare for competitions, teach students, or simply continue making music while travelling.

As our community has grown, one thing has become increasingly clear: behind every booking there is a story.

Many of these stories are surprisingly similar. They are stories about musicians facing practical challenges, unexpected obstacles, and the constant need to stay flexible in a profession where plans can change at very short notice.

Because these experiences are often shared by musicians all over the world, we have decided to start featuring some of these real-life examples in our newsletter. This month’s story is about something many musicians know all too well: finding a rehearsal space when time is running out.

Story #1: Finding a rehearsal room three hours before an audition

PianoMe – Rehearsal Spaces Sharing Community

Imagine you are travelling to another city for an important audition, competition, concert, or masterclass. You have spent weeks preparing. Every detail has been carefully planned. You arrive the day before and expect to spend a few final hours rehearsing before the big day.

Then something unexpected happens.

Perhaps the concert hall where you intended to practise is occupied by another event. Perhaps the room you planned to use suddenly becomes unavailable. Perhaps the friend who offered you a space to rehearse has an unforeseen commitment and can no longer help.

Sometimes the challenge is even more subtle.

Many musicians rely on friends or acquaintances when travelling. While this often works well, it is not always ideal. A quick visit can easily turn into a long conversation. Coffee becomes lunch, lunch becomes small talk, and before you know it, valuable rehearsal time has disappeared.

Musicians preparing for an important performance need focus. They need a quiet environment. They need an instrument. Most importantly, they need certainty.

One member of our community recently experienced exactly this situation while travelling to Vienna for a masterclass. Shortly before her arrival, her original rehearsal plans fell through. With only a few hours available, she needed an alternative.

Fortunately, she was able to find and book a suitable rehearsal room with a grand piano nearby within minutes.

The room itself was important. But what mattered even more was the peace of mind it provided. Instead of spending her afternoon searching for solutions, she was able to focus on preparing for her lessons.

For travelling musicians, this kind of flexibility can make all the difference.

Story #2: Building a teaching career without long-term commitments

PianoMe – Rent a rehearsal room from musicians near you

Not all challenges are related to travelling. Many musicians eventually decide to become self-employed music teachers. It is an exciting step, but one that comes with many practical and financial considerations.

Finding students is only one part of the equation. Finding a suitable teaching space can be equally challenging.

Traditional rental agreements often require long-term commitments, deposits, fixed monthly payments, and contractual obligations that can be difficult to justify when building a teaching practice from scratch.

Many teachers are understandably hesitant to commit to significant fixed costs before they know how quickly their student base will grow.

At the same time, teaching from home is not always possible or desirable.

This is where flexibility becomes important again.

Today, many music teachers use PianoMe to book teaching spaces on an hourly basis. They only pay for the time they actually need. If a student cancels, there is often no need to carry the burden of a permanent rental contract.

This allows teachers to focus on what truly matters: developing their teaching activities, growing their student base, and building their careers step by step.

For many musicians, flexible access to teaching and rehearsal spaces has become an important tool for reducing risk during the early stages of self-employment.

A broader challenge for the music community

These stories highlight a much larger issue.

In many cities, suitable rehearsal spaces remain surprisingly difficult to find. Musicians frequently report waiting lists, limited availability, high costs, or facilities that are only accessible to certain institutions or organisations.

This challenge affects students, professionals, teachers, ensembles, and amateur musicians alike.

No single platform can solve this problem on its own. However, we believe that the sharing economy can become part of the solution. Over the years, PianoMe has helped increase the visibility and accessibility of rehearsal spaces that might otherwise remain unused for large parts of the day.

Every additional room that becomes available helps musicians gain access to practice opportunities that may not have existed before.

A community-driven solution

PianoMe – Rehearsal Spaces Sharing Community

One of the most interesting aspects of our community is that many musicians are not only users of rehearsal spaces – they are also providers.

A musician who shares an available rehearsal room for a few hours each week is not only generating additional income. They are also helping fellow musicians continue their artistic development.

The impact extends far beyond a single booking. The more musicians, teachers, schools, studios, and private owners decide to share their available spaces, the greater the benefit for the entire music community.

More spaces become available. More musicians gain access to instruments. More teaching activities become possible. More music can happen.

This multiplier effect is one of the core ideas behind PianoMe and one of the reasons why we continue to believe that community-driven solutions can make a meaningful contribution to addressing the shortage of rehearsal spaces.

Looking Ahead

The stories featured in this newsletter are not exceptional.

In fact, they are becoming increasingly common.

Behind every booking is a musician trying to solve a practical challenge in order to focus on what matters most: making music.

In future editions, we will continue sharing real-life examples from our international community and explore how musicians, teachers, rehearsal space providers, and institutions are working together to make music more accessible for everyone.
